Although technology brought polystyrene shell helmets as early as the 1970s, on the way to the thinner, lighter, more breathable, carbon fibre helmets we see today, it would be 2003 before helmets became compulsory in the Tour. Not even the death of Fabio Casartelli on the descent of the Col de Portet d'Aspet in 1995 (see the section 'Troubles and Tragedies' in the chapter headed 'The Race' for more detail) convinced the riders that they needed to protect themselves. In 2003 Tour riders were allowed the one exception of removing their helmets before the final climb of a mountaintop finish, resulting in the bizarre spectacle of the whole field chucking their helmets in the general direction of their team helpers. The exception was ended by 2005.
